Gable House by Form - Kouichi Kimura

Gable House (or Tsumagawa ie) is implanted on a site facing an heavily travelled arterial road. Given this constraint, the architect opted for a harmony between interior and exterior.
This brown single-storey house, designed by FORM/Kouichi Kimura, contrasts with its surroundings. This is a simple volume — a rectangular box — with traditional shapes — gable (tsumagawa), windows boxes — on a 165-square-meter site with an authorized construction area of 82 square meters. The choice of these shapes responds to the climate of the city. It has been determined for snow accumulation.

Due to noise mitigation — here car traffic —, the architect uses a reinforced concrete wall to line up the house from the adjacent arterial road.
A hanging wall has been built to beyond the terrace. It helps to minimize exterior noise.

The top and bottom of this hanging wall are opened. Light can be diffused to the interior through the top opening. The bottom opening has been designed for a better view of the yard.

The plan shows a simple distribution of the inner spaces calculated to accommodate for the lack of space.
The living room occupies the largest space. Oriented to the north, it faces the outdoor terrace. The architect uses skylights and clerestories to illuminate the interior in response to the lack of windows.
An elevated study room which floors and walls are covered with wooden panels overlooks the living room.

A small bedroom, partitioned by a curtain which aims at providing more space, can be seen from the living area.
