Beirut Marina and Town Quay by Steven Holl Architects

Steven Holl Architects reveals some construction photographs of the Beirut Marina and Town Quay, a project that may be completed in 2011.
This 220,000-square-meter project consists of apartments, restaurants, outdoor public spaces with site specific art installations, speciality stores, harbormaster, yacht club and public facilities.

The Beirut Marina and Town Quay is located in a Beirut under construction, precisely in the heart of Downtown Beirut. This project will extend the existing Corniche along the Seashore along the Seashore into a series of overlapping platforms.

The Corniche is a seaside promenade in Beirut, with palm trees which line this promenade. This Corniche is popular destinations for walkers, joggers and bikers. It has been asked transform the Corniche into an 'urban beach", with levels articulated to provide outdoor spaces with public areas for artwork.

Steven Holl's proposal starts with the concept of strata and layers that will shape the building in forking vectors. The illustration or the redesign of the Beirut Marina and Town Quay, below, depicts the articulation of the building as a superposition of layers.

The project takes its inspiration from the planar lapping waves of the sea such as the ancient one. The horizontal and the planar will become a geometric force shaping the new harbor spaces.

The syncopated rhythm of platforms is achieved by constructing the overall curve of the Corniche in five angles relating to five reflecting pools.

The Beirut Marina exploits the specificity of its site, precisely the variation in height along the Corniche. The platform levels and pools vary slightly in height allowing quiet, gravity-fed fountains to connect each pool level.

Concrete and glass apart, Beirut Marina and Town Quay will use yellow stones which are typical in the   Lebanese landscape such as these benches of coral blue, white, and yellow stones that can be found in Beirut, to quote but a few.
