Patio with House by Ivanisin and Kabashi Arhitekti

Several weeks ago, I received an email from a friend who has discovered a beautiful house with its patio built with inexpensive materials.
Zagreb-based Ivanisin and Kabashi Arhitekti has designed a beautiful house with patio in 2004. This house is implanted in a 1,300 sq. m. lot, situated in the Jazbina district in the north-eastern periphery of Zagreb (Croatia).

The architects use the quality of the lot and its surroundings: a number of plain suburban family houses with small gardens and a few weekend cottages. The building is composed of an open architectural and natural arrangement. The lot is almost entirely flat with a very slight slope to the south. The architectural element is wrapped around the natural element: humid chestnut woods, mountains. The living quarters close off three sides of the patio. Shaded by a canopy, the fourth side protrudes into the garden extending it further towards the woods. The wing of the house is parallel to the street. It is composed of a two-sided living room.

The building consists of a heavy mass, thick walled hose, entirely constructed of ordinary and inexpensive materials. It is slightly elevated from the humid ground. The architects use wooden flooring to laid around the green lawn of the patio.

The dark brown walls facing the street and the neighbours are smoothly plastered. Precisely, those facing the patio are clad in recycled reject bricks in nuance from black to orange.

The concrete cornice, which protrudes from the brick cladding and rounded on its inside corners, aims at gathering the space of the patio, defining it as a room with walls.

This house takes advantage of the views, the garden, woods, and the patio. It integrates the given conditions of the locations and meets the private and social needs of its inhabitants.
